Studs are spaced 16 inches apart on centers, not 18.
Finding a stud can be quite difficult in an outside wall. With an inside wall, you can tap along it and hear a distinctive sound.
You can always locate a stud precisely by tapping a nail into the wall at various spots until you locate it. If it’s drywall, patching the holes is very simple. It beats guessing wrong and having a heavy object come crashing to the floor.
