Fans of sleeping and relaxing Sunday mornings know a lot about their mattresses. Spending eight to ten hours each night in one place can make you familiar with every bump, stitch and seam on the surface of your bed. Each night when you lay your head down to sleep you might not think about the care you are giving to your mattress in return.
If you start thinking about providing adequate cleaning and care for your mattress, you might just notice your sleep and health will improve. Begin to breathe easier by showing some concern for your bedding. Cover the mattress. You can prevent a lot of wear and tear by placing a pad on the mattress. This pad protects the surface from most stains as well as from the dust and body oils that can seep through your sheets.
Wash sheets weekly or biweekly. Keep your sheets and mattress pad clean by washing them often. Once a week or every other week should be enough for regular cleaning but stains should be treated immediately. Vacuum the surface is also important. While your sheets are being washed, vacuum the surface of the mattress to remove dust and dead skin cells.
Shampoo stains. Any stains you find should be treated with an upholstery spot cleaner then shampooed with the upholstery cleaner. Stains will need to dry before the sheets are returned and the bed is remade. Air it out often. When rotating the mattress, it is also a great idea to let it air out. Leave the mattress exposed to the air for a full day and spray the surface with a mix of lemon juice and water as a great, light air freshener.
Regular maintenance for a mattress also includes flipping and rotating the mattress. The weight and shape of your mattress will settle and compact it over time. Every six months you should flip and rotate the mattress. Smaller twin or full sized mattresses can be flipped more often since they are often light and easily moveable. Don’t just flip the top surface to the bottom. Also rotate the mattress so that the head and foot are swapped. When you turn your mattress you might notice dust and lint floats up disturbed from the surface. Now is the best time to vacuum all the sides and surfaces.
You spend a lot of time in bed alone or with your loved ones. Take care and clean your mattress so that it is fresh and clean every time you need it. Curling up on a cool, fresh mattress will provide a restful night’s sleep at every turn. If you’re going to spend one-third of your life in the bedroom, you might spend a little time caring for that mattress and making your bed a haven from stress and nightmares. Try a little cleaning and care and you can keep sweet dreams for years to come.
