Carpet cleaning: professional vs. buying home steamer?

Which would you recommend? Why? What are good home units?

Professionals are expensive and what do you do about spots and spills in between cleanings? I recently purchased an Oreck Carpet Cleaner from HSN online. I does a pretty good job of cleaning carpets, has a hose and furniture attachment and I can even clean my carpeted stairway. You can buy their detergent online; it is in a plastic bottle that fits into the machine which mixes the detergent with a hot water solution you fill directly from your faucet. It took me a while to figure out how to assemble and disassemble the tanks, but I am quite satisfied with the cleaning,
